Grade 2

Second grade is a continuing journey "to follow in Jesus' footsteps," one they have started at home with you, their parents. It is a time to grow as Christians as they prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is also a time to "master" many skills that have been introduced earlier. Included in the skills we cover in 2nd grade are:

Religion

·        Prayers including: Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Act of Contrition

·        The person of Jesus

·        Weekly school Mass

·        Advent/Lenten Devotions

·        Retreat Day, "Sheep Come Home," in preparation for Reconciliation

Handwriting

·        Review manuscript letters

·        Transition to cursive letter formation

Math

·        Addition/Subtraction with/without regrouping

·        Word problems

·        Money and time

·        Introduction to multiplication and division concepts

Reading and Language Arts

·        Phonics skills are taught daily

·        Build on new vocabulary

·        Comprehension skills

·        Oral reading

·        Writing process/skills

·        Listening skills

This is just a short lists of the skills taught. We follow all New York State and Diocesan curriculums. In addition to the listed subjects, Social Studies, Art, Music, Computer, Library, Physical Education, and Spanish are taught weekly.

Throughout the year, we take educational field trips. Some of our past trips have included: ArtPark, Theater of the Youth (TOY), the Children's Holiday Festival at Niagara Falls High School, and Buffalo Museum of Science. We also participate in the Pizza Hut "Book It" reading program. Extra-curricular activities that are available to second graders include: soccer, swimming, cheerleading (Peppers), chorus, and instructional basketball.

Our year goes very quickly. But, by June, our students' journey has brought them closer to God, to their school community, and to their academic success.
