Grade 4

Fourth grade is an exciting year of spiritual, academic, and physical growth for each child. During the school year, each child will develop skills that will help them become organized, responsible, and show an independent attitude toward doing their work.

The learning environment in fourth grade is filled with discussions, hands-on activities and projects, reading and writing skills which are taught across the curriculum, educational field trips, and much more.

During our fourth grade year, our academic subjects include the following:

Religion: Prayer, Mass each week, scripture lessons, songs, the Commandments, sacraments and church, the saints, our Catholic heritage, and helping others through community service projects.

Reading: Comprehension, word analysis skills, language skills, reference and study skills, oral reading skills, listening skills, and broadening their scope or reading (pleasure reading as well as for study).

Language Arts:

Grammar: usage and mechanics, writing skills process, creative writing, poetry, short essays, letters, book reports, research paper including reference skills, and public speaking.

Spelling: vowel sounds, consonant sounds, compound and plural forms, homophones, affixes, possessives, contractions, syllabication, and alphabetical sequence.

Math: Numeration, operations with whole numbers, (+, -, x, and /), fractions and ratios, decimals, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics, graphs, charts, and problem solving.

Social Studies:
Focuses on political institutions and historic development beginning at the local community and comparing to State and National level. Students will focus on the past, present, and future of New York State's history. Geographic skills will also be taught; various projects include a salt map of N.Y. State and a research paper on a Native American Tribe.

Science/Health: Earth's land resources, properties of matter, animals, magnetism and electricity, weather and climate, the body's delivery system, and safety. Hands-on activities coincide with each unit taught. Also, various projects such as a science project for the Science Fair will be done.

Education Field Trips: Past field trips have included: Tifft Nature Preserve, Murphy Orchards, The Iney Wallens Radio Show, Lockport Locks, and Erie Canal Cruise. Our field trips are selected to add to the learning experience for fourth graders.

Grade 4 follows the New York State and Diocesan curriculums. Fourth graders take the N. Y. State Standardized Test in E. L. A., Math, and Science.
