Middle School Math

6th Grade (Advanced and Regents)

The focus of the early chapters in Math Course 2 is on rational numbers, their operations, and their algebraic representations.  Students will build their understanding of these concepts using models, such as rulers, number lines, and verbal models.  Students will also apply their skills to problem solving situations and use estimation to check reasonableness.  Topics from math strands, such as measurement conversions, area, average, and data displays are introduced early in the course and then integrated and expanded upon throughout.

Later chapters in Math Course 2 include topics such as equation and functions, geometry, square roots, and probability.  The number and variety of problems, ranging from basic to challenging, give students the practice they need to develop their math skills.  Every lesson in Math Course 2 has both skills practice and problem solving, including multi-step problems.  These types of problems often appear on standardized tests and cover a wide variety of math types.

7th Grade (Regents)

The focus of the early chapters in Math Course 3 is on rational numbers and their operations, equations, and inequalities.  Students will build their understanding of these concepts using models such as Algebra tiles, number lines, and verbal models.  Students will also apply their skills to problem solving situations and use estimations to check reasonableness.  Topics from math strands, such as real number properties, geometric formulas, and averages are introduced early in the course and then integrated and expanded throughout.

Later chapters in Math Course 3 include topics such as linear equations and their graphs, properties of right triangles, geometric formations, and probability.  The number and variety of problems, ranging from basic to challenging, give students the practice they need to develop their math skills.  Every lesson in Math Course 3 has both skill practice and problem solving, including multi-step problems. These types of problems often appear on standardized tests and cover a wide variety of math topics.

7th Grade (Advanced) and 8th Grade (Regents)

Pre-Algebra will give the students a strong foundation in Algebra (writing, evaluating, simplifying expressions, solving, graphing, ordering, applying, identifying, and performing) while also preparing them for future study of geometry, probability, and data analysis.  The number and wide variety of exercises--ranging from basic exercises that help students develop and practice skills to challenging exercises that involve logical reasoning and problem solving, give students the practice they need to develop their math skills.

Every lesson in Pre-Algebra has both skill practice and problem solving, including multi-step problems.  These types of problems often appear on standardized tests and cover a wide variety of math topics.

Algebra 1 (8th Grade Advanced)

Algebra 1 is organized around families, with special emphasis on linear and quadratic functions.  As the students study each family of functions, they will represent them in multiple ways---as verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs.  The students will also learn to model real-world situations using functions in order to solve problems arising from these situations.

In addition to algebra content.  Algebra 1 includes lessons on probability and data analysis as well as numerous examples and exercises involving geometry.  There math topics often appear on standardized tests, so maintaining familiarity with them is important.
